Reading Broadens Horizons: iST and Future Family Supporting the Growth of Rural Students for a Decade

A magazine may not change the world, but for children in remote areas, it can become a window to discover it.

Educational inequality is not only reflected in classroom resources—it is also reflected in children's opportunities to explore the world beyond their immediate surroundings. Since 2016, iST has partnered with the Global Views Educational Foundation and Future Family to donate Future Children and Future Junior magazines to elementary schools in rural areas of Taitung. Through the power of reading, we hope to help students broaden their horizons, build knowledge, and discover new possibilities for their future.

Over the past decade, this commitment has remained steadfast. As of 2025, iST has donated more than 8,300 copies of the magazines to 37 elementary schools in rural Taitung, benefiting over 5,000 teachers and students. Covering topics such as science, environmental sustainability, world cultures, and emerging technologies, these publications provide young readers with opportunities to explore the world beyond their classrooms while cultivating curiosity and independent learning skills.

For many families in rural communities, access to extracurricular reading materials can be limited by economic constraints. Reading, however, has the power to transcend geographical and financial barriers. Through these magazines, children can learn about scientific discoveries, global issues, diverse cultures, and the challenges facing our planet. Each page helps expand their perspectives, nurture global awareness, and inspire dreams that reach beyond their local communities.

The long-term impact of this initiative is reflected in feedback from educators. According to the 2025 Reading Impact Survey, 100% of participating school principals agreed that the program helps foster reading habits and broaden students’ horizons. Additionally, 96% reported that the magazine content serves as a valuable classroom teaching resource, while 82% identified Future Children and Future Junior as among students’ preferred reading materials. These results demonstrate the meaningful role that reading resources can play in supporting educational development in rural communities.

At iST, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to discover the world through learning. Moving forward, we will continue working with Future Family and other educational partners to bring high-quality reading resources to underserved communities, helping knowledge and hope reach every corner where they are needed and empowering more children to explore a future full of possibilities.
