From a “Tape Robot” to the Presidential Office: A Story of Resilience from Taiwan’s Young Innovators

What happens when the robot you prepared for a world championship never makes it to the competition?

This year, VIS MARS Robotics traveled to Türkiye to compete in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) World Championship. Upon arrival, the team discovered that their competition robot, tools, and parts had been held by customs and could not be delivered in time. After 72 hours of trying to resolve the situation, the team had to accept that their equipment would not arrive before the competition.
With the competition just around the corner, they decided to start over.

The students borrowed tools from other teams and searched for discarded parts they could reuse. Without the original design drawings, they rebuilt the robot while testing and modifying it along the way. Because much of the robot was assembled from materials found on site, the team affectionately called it their “tape robot.”

Against all odds, the newly rebuilt robot went on to win four qualification matches and achieved the highest score of the day’s opening match.

The experience brought VIS MARS and its young team into the spotlight, showcasing their technical skills, teamwork, and resilience. On August 31, the team was received by Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, who recognized their ability to adapt and work together when faced with unexpected challenges.

For iST, supporting VIS MARS means supporting a group of young people who are willing to get hands-on, take on challenges, and keep looking for solutions when things do not go as planned.
Advances in technology require both innovation and talent.

Young talent is built through hands-on experience — designing, building, testing, learning from failure, and trying again. These experiences help young people develop the confidence and ability to face real-world challenges and solve problems.

iST is proud to have accompanied VIS MARS on their journey to the world stage. Congratulations to the team on their achievements and recognition by President Lai.
We look forward to seeing these young innovators continue to pursue their passion for technology and create even more achievements that Taiwan can be proud of.
