A New School Year Begins with Science: iST Brings the Mobile Chemistry Program from the Mountains to the Coast
September marks the beginning of a new school year. As students returned to their classrooms, a different kind of “chemistry class” also made its way through the mountains and coastal communities of Hsinchu. Integrated Service Technology Inc. (iST) continues to support the “Fun with Chemistry” science outreach program organized by the Science Education Center of Tamkang University. This time, the mobile chemistry program visited Wufeng Junior High School in Hsinchu County and Fu-Li Junior High School in Xiangshan District, Hsinchu City. Traveling from the mountains to the coast, the program reached nearly 100 students across the two schools, inviting them to begin the new semester with stories, demonstrations, and hands-on experiments that brought science to life. From the Mountains to the Coast, Bringing Science Closer to Students The first stop was Wufeng Junior High School, surrounded by the mountains of Hsinchu County, where more than 40 students began the new semester exploring the wonders of science. The following day, the program continued to Fu-Li Junior High School near the Xiangshan coast, where nearly 60 students joined the journey into the world of chemistry. One school sits among the mountains, while the other lies near the sea. Their surroundings may be different, but the excitement in the students’ eyes as they experienced the experiments was much the same. What began with quiet curiosity soon turned into excited reactions as the experiments unfolded before their eyes. Questions of “Why did that happen?” were quickly followed by eager hands raised to answer. Scientific concepts that once seemed abstract in textbooks became real and engaging through the experience of seeing, experimenting, and discovering for themselves. One Experiment Can Be the Beginning of a Journey of Discovery At iST, we believe access to educational opportunities should not be limited by geography. Sometimes, all it takes to spark a student’s interest in science is one truly engaging experience. Launched in 2012 by the Science Education Center of Tamkang University, the “Fun with Chemistry” science outreach program has conducted more than 850 activities and reached over 100,000 students, approximately 65% of whom come from rural or underserved communities. Over the years, the team has brought its mobile chemistry program to schools across Taiwan, bridging geographic and educational gaps and giving more students the opportunity to experience science through hands-on learning. iST is proud to be part of this ongoing journey, joining forces with academic and industry partners to support the continued outreach of “Fun with Chemistry.” Through engaging chemistry stories, interactive demonstrations, and hands-on experiments, the program makes science more accessible and turns curiosity into the first step toward learning. Through this continued involvement, we also hope to transform corporate support for education into meaningful, long-term engagement. As the new school year begins, we hope to give these students more than just a fun chemistry class. More importantly, we hope to spark their curiosity and inspire them to explore the world around them. Perhaps today’s simple “Wow, how did that happen?” will be the very first moment that inspires a lifelong interest in science. |
